If your kid is like mine…

Then their interests ebb and flow with seasons.

We’ve recently moved on from an intense 49ers obsession, where daily backyard football drills mimicking Brock Purdy and Brandon Aiyuk was a daily experience.

But now, it’s all about baseball.

My son didnt pick up a glove or bat all winter long.

However, a few days before his first practice he randomly asked me to hit baseballs in the backyard. Pic taken by wife above ;)

I perked up and we went outside and spent two hours fielding ground balls, reenacting Giants vs. Dodgers matchups, and hitting balls over the fence — a small fortune lost to the neighbor’s yard in today’s economy.

We just had our first coach pitch practice over the weekend where I am the head coach.

Half of the kids on the team couldn’t hit the ball off the tee.

Some of my players didn’t know which hand their mitt goes on.

None of the kids could catch a moving baseball.

Our first game is this weekend. Which is crazy because I haven’t even memorized my players’ names.

Im feeling like its unfair to the kids that they are playing a game after only 2 practices.

They would have so much more fun during their first games if we had a few more practices to get the repetitions they so desperately need.

This is where you come in.

Parents, your kids need you.

But if you want to maximize the chances of your child thriving in baseball and enjoying the experience, they need to practice a little at home.

They dont need a lot, just 10-15 minutes once or twice a week.

Nothing crazy.

No coaching needed.

No instruction.

Literally just a good ole fashion game of catch.

That’s it. That’s the challenge.

It’ll do wonders for their development and competitive experience.

And if you’re saying, my kid doesnt want to play catch.
I get it. My kid doesnt love playing catch yet, because he’s 6 and can maybe catch 1 of 5 throws.

The key is not to force it but to keep offering.
And when they finally do say yes, gamify and make it FUN!

Make little mini challenges. See how many they can catch in 1 minute. How many catches in a row. Which level pop fly they can catch. Get crazy with it!

Playing catch with your child is an incredible way to bond and connect. For me, its therapeutic.

Hope you and your family are excited to ride the wave of this baseball season and I inspired someone out there to get outside and play some more catch!

In your corner,
Captain Fun
